Vol. 496 No. 6

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Michael Finucane

Question:

440 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education and Science if the working principal at Courtenay primary school, Newcastlewest, County Limerick, will be appointed administrative principal in view of the excessive workload for the principal in her roles in teaching and administrative work. [23746/98]

In order to qualify for a post of administrative principal, a school is required to have eight mainstream class teachers. Since Courtenay primary school has only six mainstream class teachers, unfortunately, I cannot sanction an administrative principalship for the school at this stage.

I would, however, point out to the Deputy that the school has entitlement to a deputy principal and three special duties teacher posts. These four post of responsibility holders are all members of the school's management team and should, between them, share the management work of the school.
