Written Answers. - Cancer Treatment Services.

Alan Shatter

Question:

81 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide the funding sought by St James's Hospital, Dublin 8, and Trinity College, Dublin 2, for the establishment of a laboratory for the molecular diagnosis of malignant disorders to be located at St James's Hospital in order to ensure patients fully benefit from recent medical research in this area. [22407/98]

I wish to confirm that my Department has received a proposal from St. James's Hospital for the establishment of a molecular diagnostics/ cytogentics unit at the hospital.

St. James's currently use the Department of Genetics in Trinity College, Dublin, for this service.

This proposal which is currently under review in my Department will be considered in the context of the availability of resources for developments at the hospital and the competing demands for such resources.
