Vol. 497 No. 2

Written Answers - Tax Relief.

Nora Owen

Question:

214 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Finance if he is considering a proposal made by an interest group to introduce a scheme of tax relief for upgrading equipment in relation to the year 2000 computer problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24444/98]

I can confirm that I recently received a proposal from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland for a special 100 per cent tax allowance for upgrading equipment in relation to the Year 2000 computer problem. I have indicated in a recent reply that, in view of reducing corporation tax rates and the fact that there are already adequate allowances in the existing tax system, it is not appropriate to provide a special allowance for conversion expenditure in relation to Year 2000.
