Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Pirate Radio and TV Stations.

178.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the estimated number of pirate radio stations in operation at present; and his Department's intentions in regard to their future.

179.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he proposed to introduce legislation to regularise the chaotic situation that has resulted from illegal broadcasting both in radio and television; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 178 and 179 together.

It is difficult to give a reliable estimate but report suggest that there may be some 35 illegal radio stations operating, at least occasionally.

It is my intention shortly to seek the approval of this House for new legislation which will enable my Department to take effective action to close down illegal broadcasting stations wherever they can be detected.
