Vol. 497 No. 2

Written Answers - Income Levels.

Michael Noonan

Question:

220 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Finance the latest available average income figures, by county, compiled by the Revenue Commissioners; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24729/98]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that, while they can provide a tentative breakdown of certain tax receipts figures by county, they are not in a position to compile reliable average income figures on a county by county basis. The available tax receipts figures are derived from tax returns relating to some 1.1. million taxpayers. However, the allocation by county of the incomes of PAYE employees, which represent the bulk of the tax receipts, would be misleading because each employee is associated in Revenue's computer system with the county in which his or her employer is registered for PAYE purposes, regardless of the address of the actual workplace or of the individual's home address.
