Vol. 497 No. 2

Written Answers - Hospital Doctors.

Richard Bruton

Question:

248 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on whether trainee doctors working in hospitals as part of their qualification should receive payment; and if the policy in this respect is out of line with other European countries. [24798/98]

I assume that the Deputy is referring to trainee doctors who are not entitled to full registration until they have served for one year as a resident medical doctor at a hospital or hospitals recognised for the purpose. During this period trainee doctors or interns are provisionally registered with the Irish Medical Council. Interns in approved posts in hospitals are paid the appropriate levels of remuneration.
