Vol. 497 No. 2

Written Answers - Vehicle Weighbridges.

Enda Kenny

Question:

272 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of weighbridges located in each county; the way in which it is proposed to implement the Road Traffic Acts, 1961 to 1995, in view of the fact that hauliers suspected of overloading must be brought to a weighbridge within five miles of the point of being stopped and inspected by the Garda; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24490/98]

Under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, the declaration of a weighbridge as an appointed weighbridge for the purpose of enforcing maximum vehicle weight limits is a matter for a road authority. On the basis of the most recent information available to my Department, the number of such weighbridges located in each county is set out in the following table.

Enforcement of maximum vehicle weight limits is a matter for the Garda Síochána which in addition to the weighbridges listed in the table, may use mobile weighbridges, for that purpose.
