Question:

318 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of persons on the back to work allowance scheme; the number on this scheme in 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24834/98]

There are currently 23,587 persons participating in the back to work allowance scheme of whom 13,882 are in employment and 9,705 are in self employment. There were 21,101 participants on the allowance at the end of December 1997. There is a continuing high level of applications for the scheme which shows its continuing attraction as a method of assisting unemployed people to the active workforce.
