Written Answers - Special Educational Needs.

Richard Bruton

Question:

369 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will introduce a separate assessment system for students with disabilities at all levels in the senior cycle. [25696/98]

While I continually keep the examination arrangements for students with disabilities under review, I believe the concept of having a separate assessment system for students with disabilities may be unwise.

In a national system of examinations all candidates including those with disabilities are assessed nationally in accordance with agreed criteria. The development of a separate assessment system could undermine the qualifications obtained. Additionally, there would be implications for the policy of integration of students with disabilities at all stages of second level education.
