Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - Local Authority Rents.

Seán Barrett

Question:

197 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the costs involved if local authorities transfer old age pensioners, whose only income is the old age pension, to a fixed rent; and the fixed rent to be that being paid in 1998. [26068/98]

Local authorities have, for many years, been required to let their dwellings on an incomerelated basis. At this stage only a very small number of tenancies, which are of a long standing nature, are on fixed rents. The costs of transferring tenancies of old age pensioners to fixed rents would depend on the level at which rents were fixed and the number of dwellings occupied by pensioners. As the determination of the rents of their dwellings is the responsibility of individual local authorities, information is not available in the Department to enable the costs sought to be computed.
