Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

80 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the registrar at the School of Celtic Studies following the recent decision to suspend him; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25784/98]

The School of Celtic Studies is one of the three constituent schools of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, which was established under the Institute for Advanced Studies Act, 1940. The institute is a body corporate established under the 1940 Act and responsibility for the general government of the institute is vested in the council of the institute. Section 17 of the 1940 Act provides that the council shall appoint the registrar, who holds office on such tenure and conditions as the council shall, with the approval of the Minister for Education and Science given with the concurrence of the Minister for Finance, determine. The present position is that I am considering the resolution of council to terminate the appointment of the registrar, which requires my approval and the concurrence of the Minister for Finance.
