Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

381 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will allow applicants for asylum who are waiting for six months or more to take up paid employment or study; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27498/98]

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 26 of 26 November 1998.

I have nothing further to add at present.

In relation to allowing asylum seekers the right to study, an asylum seeker may undergo a course of study providing she or he provides the necessary funding for the course. However, the fact that the person is studying will not have any bearing on the decision taken on his or her asylum application.
