Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Enrolments.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

410 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the senior cycle of fifth and sixth class groupings in Scoil Naisiúnta, Ballinakill, County Laois, in respect of 1999 will be 44; the proposals, if any, he has to deal with this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27260/98]

The difficulty that the Deputy has in mind in relation to Scoil Náisiúnta, Ballinakill is not clear. I assume the Deputy is referring to the staff allocation at the school in the 1999-2000 school year. If this is the case, then I must point out to the Deputy that I have not yet made any decisions regarding staffing allocations for primary schools for the 1999-2000 school year.

In the current school year, the school has a staffing of a principal and three teachers based on the school's enrolment of 117 pupils in September 1997. I understand that the enrolment at the school in the current year is 120 pupils which is capable of being managed within maximum class size guidelines.
