Vol. 498 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Perry

Question:

424 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 334 of 1 December 1998 in relation to a person (details supplied) in County Sligo, he will approve the home tuition which was previously sanctioned on 3 September 1997 until he is suitably placed; if his attention has been drawn to fact that the tuition has been withdrawn before he was placed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27452/98]

I am aware of the child referred to by the Deputy.

Home tuition was sanctioned in this case as an interim measure while a suitable placement was pursued. I understand that the mother of the child in question was notified that tuition was being withdrawn as a suitable placement was available in either of two special schools.
A place is available in the nearest suitable school to the child in question and accordingly he is ineligible for tutition under the home tuition scheme.
