Vol. 498 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Government Reform.

John Gormley

Question:

172 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the policy provisions made in the Local Government (No. 2) Bill for the implementation of Agenda 21; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28016/98]

A comprehensive Local Government Bill to modernise and reform general local government law is being prepared as part of an overall local government renewal programme. This Bill will include measures to underpin arrangements for local, sectoral and community participation. I refer to the reply to Question No. 219 of 9 December 1998 which outlined a range of initiatives that have been progressed to facilitate greater participation in local government.

Details of action towards implementation of Local Agenda 21 by local authorities are contained in the current issue (No. 40) of my Department's environment bulletin, which has been distributed to all Deputies and is also available in the Oireachtas Library.
