Vol. 498 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bovine Tuberculosis.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

19 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reasons there is a huge increase in the incidence to tuberculosis in the national cattle herd in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27850/98]

The bovine tuberculosis level tends to be cyclical and the increase in the incidence observed in 1998 follows a period in which the lowest figures for many years were recorded.

An analysis of the reasons for the increase is currently being undertaken and the results will be considered with the farm and veterinary organisations in the scientific sub-group of the animal health forum as soon as they are available. Research projects including the specialised work of the TB investigation unit are continuing with the aim of providing new technologies required to eradicate TB. The research is focused in particular on the role of the badger in the spread of the disease as well as establishing the best possible information on the causes of the disease spread. Particular attention is also given to research at an international level, with a view to ensuring that the best possible diagnostic methods are available.
