Vol. 498 No. 5

Written Answers. - Beef Classification System.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

47 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has satisfied himself with the grading system as it operates here; the plans, if any, he has to overhaul this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27872/98]

I presume the Deputy is referring to the grading of beef.

The beef carcase classification scheme is based on EU legislation which lays down the precise classification standards for carcasses and checks which must be carried out to ensure uniformity throughout each member state. Officers of my Department are responsible for operating the scheme in Ireland and I am satisfied that they do this to the highest possible standards.

Notwithstanding the fact that considerable Department resources are tied up in the classification scheme and that every effort is made to ensure uniform standards, I am aware that the classification system has come under some criticism. Accordingly, my Department in conjunction with the industry, is examining the possibility of introducing a totally objective classification system, based on mechanical grading. To advance this development, arrangements are being made for a trial of such a system within a meat plant and to assess its potential under Irish conditions. I wish to add, however, that any changes along these lines will depend on the practical experience of the mechanical system and will require EU approval.
