Vol. 498 No. 6

Written Answers - Motor Vehicle Registrations.

Austin Deasy

Question:

52 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Finance the latest available figure for the number of vehicles registered; and the way in which this compares with the numbers registered in 1978 and 1988. [24127/98]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners, who are responsible for the registration of vehicles since 1993, that the number of vehicles first registered in 1998, up to the end of November, is 241,018, of which 185,313 are cars.

The equivalent figures for 1978 and 1998, which have been supplied by the Department of the Environment and Local Government, who were responsible for vehicle registration up to 1993, are as follows:

Year

Total Number of Vehicles

1978

133,562 (of which 105,582 are cars)

1988

82,285 (of which 68,126 are cars)

It should be noted that the figures shown above include vehicles which were exempt from payment of tax or duty e.g. diplomatic cars and registrations on transfer of residence.
