Trevor Sargent

Question:

660 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the seniority of the official in his Department with specific responsibility for the interests of cyclists. [1079/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 659 and 660 together.

My Department's stated sectoral goal in relation to road transportation and safety is to provide, within the framework of a balanced, integrated and sustainable transport policy, for the safe and efficient movement of persons and goods by road. It principally falls to the roads division of my Department to take forward this work. That division is headed by an Assistant Secretary and its structure is set out in Appendix 2 of my Department's Statement of Strategy 1998-2001, which is available in the Oireachtas Library.

There is no official in my Department with sole or specific responsibility for either car users or the interests of cyclists.
