Vol. 499 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Ivan Yates

Question:

981 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education and Science if the pick-up point for secondary school pupils (details supplied) in County Wexford will be marginally altered on the grounds of safety and convenience for the families involved; and if this request will be approved in view of the minimal extra cost involved. [1572/99]

Eligible second level pupils who choose to attend a school outside of their catchment area may be allowed transport only from the nearest pick-up point within the catchment area of the school they attend. Such transport is subject to spare seats being available and no additional State cost being incurred. The pupils to whom the Deputy refers are attending school outside of their catchment area. In the circumstances, I regret that it is not open to my Department to sanction an extension of the service through an adjoining catchment area, as this would be contrary to the terms of the school transport scheme.
