Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Regulations.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

17 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the booklet, Rules of the Road, is available free of charge in motor taxation offices; his views on whether this document should be available free of charge in view of the increasing number of road traffic accidents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1461/99]

The present version of the Rules of the Road booklet was published in 1995 and has been available for purchase at a cost of £2 from post offices and booksellers throughout the country and directly from the Government Publications Sales Office. Some half a million copies of this and of the preceding version of the booklet have so far been sold under this arrangement, which was developed principally to support an improved distribution for the Rules of the Road.

The Rules of the Road booklet is again being revised in light of changes in road traffic law and regulations since 1995. This will provide the opportunity to consider any desirable improvements in arrangements for dissemination, including publication on the Internet.
