Vol. 499 No. 2

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Alan Shatter

Question:

18 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide the funding to South Dublin County Council sought in its letter of 8 January 1999 in respect of the construction of a permanent bridge over the Dodder, the new Spawell roundabout to Firhouse Road link and for the necessary realignment of Knocklyon Road; and his views on the essential need to facilitate the undertaking and completion of these works within a period of eighteen months in order to avoid total traffic gridlock and chaos in the Knocklyon and Firhouse areas. [2042/99]

My Department has recently received a request from South Dublin County Council for grant assistance towards the realignment of Knocklyon Road and the provision of a new Dodder bridge at Spawell. This proposal is being examined and will be responded to as soon as possible.

I understand that South Dublin County Council has also approached the National Roads Authority for a contribution to this project in view of its relevance to the opening of the section of the Southern Cross Route from Balrothery to Scholarstown.
