Vol. 499 No. 3

Written Answers - Liquor Licensing Laws.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

324 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received a submission from clubs (details supplied) in Cork on the reform of the licensing law as it applies to clubs; and, if so, the action, if any, he will take in relation to that submission. [2728/99]

I can confirm that I received a submission from the clubs in question seeking the reform of certain aspects of the Registration of Clubs Acts, 1904 to 1995. Officials in my Department met with representatives of the clubs on 27 October 1998.

I have already informed the House, on a number of occasions, that a review of the licensing laws is currently taking place in my Department, and that it is my intention to bring forward the heads of a Bill for the Government's consideration at the earliest possible opportunity this year. The details of the legislative proposals will be announced in the usual way following their consideration by the Government.

The review has taken account of the many submissions, including the submission referred to by the Deputy, which have been received in response to the invitation, by way of advertisements placed by my Department in the national and local press on 4 August 1998, for comments on our licensing laws.
