Vol. 500 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries.

Jim Higgins

Question:

32 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the directorate and unit within the European Commission responsible for managing its interests in the implementation of the tourism angling measure, with particular reference to the development of the fisheries (reference Nos. 19/8 and 19/8a) on the Moy. [28369/98]

My Department is responsible for the implementation of the tourism angling measure, TAM, of the Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994 to 1999, and the Central Fisheries Board is charged with its day-to-day running. The Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation is the lead Department for the Operational Programme for Tourism. DG XVI is the relevant EU Commission Directorate with responsibility for regional policy and the European Regional Development Fund from which the Tourism Operational Programme is funded.

The North-Western Regional Fisheries Board has undertaken extensive development work on fishery no. 19/8 under the TAM and work is scheduled to be carried out on fishery no. 19/8a when water conditions permit. The development works are aimed at creating a substantial number of additional angling spaces through the provision of holding pools for adult salmon on the River Moy.
