Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Water Fluoridation.

Liz McManus

Question:

254 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children if an analysis has been done by his Department on international research into the dangers of fluoridation in drinking water in view of increasing evidence in this regard; if he has satisfied himself that the fluoridation of drinking water carries no risk to the public; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4109/99]

The most authoritive source of information regarding international research on any possible health risks posed by the fluoridation of drinking water is the World Health Organisation. The World Health Organisation in its most recent review on fluorides, which was published in 1994 – Technical Report Series 846 – gives an overview of all concerns relating to fluorides together with references for the relevant studies. This review confirms that the fluoridation of drinking water at optimal levels is not a cause for concern on public health grounds.

My Department also routinely monitors various scientific journals and publications for any new research which may be of relevance.

The fluoridation of drinking water has long been recognised internationally as a safe and effective way to improve oral health and I have no reasons for concern.
