Vol. 500 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

162 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the plans, if any, she has to re-open the railway line between Cork and Midleton; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4093/99]

All railway operational matters, including those related to the re-opening of railway lines, are the responsibility of CIE and Iarnród Éireann. I have no statutory function in these matters.

As I said in answer to a parliamentary question on 15 December, 1998, I understand that the question or re-opening this line was recently examined by CIE.

The conclusion was reached that the necessary investment could not be justified in the short to medium term, but that the option should be kept under review in the longer term.
