332 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the contact, if any, he has had with the Department of Finance in relation to the anomaly in the VAT regime whereby VAT on energy consumption is lower than that on energy conservation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Energy taxation issues, including issues associated with VAT in the energy sector, were raised by me with my colleague, Deputy McCreevy, Minister for Finance, in the context of preparations for the budget in December 1998.
