Charles Flanagan

Question:

382 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education and Science when a decision will be made on the appointment of a remedial teacher to Crinkle national school, County Offaly. [4972/99]

John McGuinness

Question:

397 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a remedial teacher for five rural schools (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5075/99]

Beverley Flynn

Question:

403 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Education and Science if Tavneena national school, Charlestown, County Mayo, will be allocated a remedial teacher as a matter of urgency. [5150/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 382, 397 and 403 together.

Arrangements are currently being made in my Department to extend the remedial teacher service to all primary schools from September next. As part of this development, primary schools with a pupil teacher ratio of below 10:1 may apply for a service where they can demonstrate the particualr needs of their pupils. The remedial needs of the schools referred to by the Deputies will be addressed in this context.

Michael Ring

383 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if a remedial teacher will be appointed to St. Peter's national school, Snugboro, Castlebar, County Mayo, where 20 of the 241 pupils need remedial teaching assistance (details supplied). [4973/99]

Enda Kenny

Question:

402 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether the remedial teacher working with St Peter's, Scoil Raifteirí and Erren national schools carries an unacceptable workload in attempting to deal with 49 remedial pupils; if he intends to allow this situation to continue indefinitely; the recommended number this teacher should be dealing with; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5109/99]

Beverley Flynn

Question:

404 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for Education and Science if an extra remedial teacher (details supplied) will be appointed to St. Peter's national school, Snugboro, Castlebar, County Mayo. [5151/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 383, 402 and 404 together.

My priority at present is to ensure that all schools have access to a remedial service with effect from September 1999, and arrangements are currently being made in my Department to this end.

I can assure the Deputies that the needs of St. Peter's national school, Scoil Raifteirí and Erren national school will be considered in the event that additional resources become available to improving existing remedial services.
