Vol. 500 No. 7

Written Answers. - Horticultural Chemicals.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

258 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on the proposed EU ban of the soil sterilant methyl bromide; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5299/99]

The use of methyl bromide is to be phased out by 2005 under proposals currently under consideration by EU Council of Environment Ministers. The proposals provide for a reduction of 60 per cent in the use of methyl bromide by 2001 and 75 per cent by 2003 on the 1991 reference levels. It is hoped that this timetable will allow sufficient time for the horticulture industry to adapt to economically feasible alternative pest and soil control measures.
