Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tobacco Industry.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

240 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health and Children the assistance, if any, his Department has provided for individuals taking legal action against the tobacco industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6042/99]

I am advised that there are a number of cases being brought against the tobacco industry by law firms on behalf of a large number of clients. I have already advised the Dáil that I do not con sider it the best use of public funds to provide financial assistance for each individual case taken through individual firms of solicitors.

I have agreed to support the development of a tobacco information resource and research centre. This centre when operational will be a valuable source of information on all aspects of tobacco. Persons who have been made ill by tobacco products and their representatives will be able to access this centre.
