Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Housing Grants.

John Browne

Question:

286 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason a new house grant was refused for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford who is suffering from a rare illness and must reside in a timber framed house; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6181/99]

A new house grant is payable only where a house meets the conditions and the standards specified by my Department and set out in the explanatory memorandum, HAI, on new house grants supplied to each applicant for a grant. In particular, construction of the house must be in compliance with the requirements of the building regulations. The suitability of timber framed systems must be demonstrated through certification by a competent body, such as the National Standards Authority of Ireland, NSAI/Irish Agreement Board. In this case, the certification required has not been received. As a consequence, a new house grant is not payable and the applicant has been notified accordingly.
