The question of the ratification by Ireland of the UN Convention Against the Taking of Hostages is a matter for decision by Government.
However, before Ireland would be in a position to ratify the convention, certain changes may be necessary in our domestic law. This matter is currently being examined in my Department, which, as the Deputy will be aware, has an extensive programme of legislation at present. Once the legislative position has been clarified and any necessary legislation put in place ratification could then take place. While I am not in a position to give a precise timeframe, the above mentioned examination will be completed as quickly as possible.
