Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

348 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science if a further grant has been approved to allow for a larger physical education hall at Firhouse community college, Dublin 24; if so, the total grant approved; if the sanction for a larger hall has been conveyed to County Dublin VEC; and if he will make a statement on the building process and the timeframe within which work on the hall will be completed. [5859/99]

Architectural planning had been in progress for a physical education hall at Firhouse community college.

However, it was necessary to revise the size of the hall as a result of the recent initiative to provide ten enlarged sports halls in drug task force areas. Funding for the project will be shared between my Department, the Department of the Environment and Local Government and the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs. It is not the policy of my Department to provide details of estimated costings on individual projects in advance of tenders being sought as to do so could compromise the tendering process.

Amendments to the architectural and structural drawings to reflect an increase in the size of the hall are at present being undertaken. Tenders will be invited for the project when these amendments have been completed. However, I am not in a position at this point to say when construction will commence. The County Dublin VEC has been informed of the situation.
