Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Consumers Association of Ireland.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

113 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the plans, if any, she has to provide funding for the Consumers Association of Ireland in view of the important work undertaken by it in the public interest and the fact it does not receive any funding from the Exchequer; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6003/99]

The Consumers' Association of Ireland (CAI) plays an important role in the promotion of consumer interests. Historically, the CAI has received most of its funding from its membership, from magazine and publication income, and from the European Commission for projects undertaken to protect and promote consumer interests. I am aware that the CAI has submitted a grant application to the Commission following publication of the call for projects to promote and protect the interests of consumers in 1999. My Department supports the CAI application and will convey this to the Commission.

My Department has not received a request for funding from the CAI for 1999. However, both my Department and the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs have previously indicated that they would be prepared to consider supporting a suitable project proposed by the CAI.
