Vol. 501 No. 4

Written Answers. - Suicide Incidence.

Dan Neville

Question:

99 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of suicides by gender in 1998. [6443/99]

Data on mortality are routinely published in the annual and quarterly reports on vital statistics compiled by the Central Statistics Office. The most recent figures available refer to the third quarter of 1998 and show that there were 293 male deaths and 66 female deaths from suicide. These figures are provisional as they refer to deaths registered during January to September 1998 rather than deaths which actually occurred during that period.
