Vol. 501 No. 4

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Enda Kenny

Question:

114 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on whether the driving test is a comprehensive test of an applicant's ability to drive competently in accordance with the rules of the road under Irish conditions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6382/99]

In common with the European Union generally, the driving test in Ireland is designed in accordance with the requirements of Directive 91/439/EEC on driving licences which sets out the skills which a driver must demonstrate during a driving test. I am satisfied that this approach, which remains open to further possible improvement, is appropriate in relation both to Irish conditions and those of the EU Internal Market.

Irish driving licences issued after successful completion of the driving test are recognised within the EU and in a number of other countries.
