Vol. 501 No. 4

Written Answers. - Control of Animals.

Richard Bruton

Question:

115 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of enforcement actions taken against dog owners who fail to have their dogs on designated muzzles or on leads. [6383/99]

Regulations made in 1991 under the Control of Dogs Act, 1986, provide that specified breeds or types of dogs are required to be leashed and muzzled at all times while in a public place.

Up to and including 1997, the latest year for which statistics are available, 49 prosecutions for breaches of the leashing regulations and 19 prosecutions for breaches of the muzzling requirements were taken by local authorities.
