Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Golf for Young People Initiative.

Bernard Allen

Question:

378 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has satisfied himself that the golf initiative for young people will not only target existing clubs and organisations but will also have as one of its aims to develop the sport amongst young people from disadvantaged areas. [7007/99]

Question:

379 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will give details of the golf for young people initiative; and the contact, if any, there has been with the Golfing Union of Ireland, the Irish Ladies' Golf Union and golf clubs on this initiative. [7008/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 378 and 379 together.

Annual allocations are made to the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies' Golf Union under the grant scheme for national governing bodies of sport as a contribution towards the cost of their administration, organisational development, international competition and training and hosting of international events. The Department has no current proposal from these bodies specifically directed at young people from disadvantaged areas and any such proposal, or any other proposal concerning golf initiatives for young people, would of course be the subject of consultation with the ILGU and the GUI before any decision would be made on such initiatives.
