Vol. 502 No. 1

Written Answers. - Anti-Racism Measures.

Liz McManus

Question:

86 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to strengthen the anti-racist laws; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7223/99]

The Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act, 1989, made it an offence to incite hatred against any group of persons in the State or elsewhere on account of their race, colour, nationality, religion, ethnic or national origins, membership of the travelling community or sexual orientation. While this legislation has been the subject of review from time to time since its enactment, I am having a further examination carried out. The timetable for the conclusion of this examination will be subject to the disposal of current legislative priorities. Proposals, if any, for amending legislation will be announced in the usual way.
