87 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of young homeless people who presented themselves to Garda stations in 1998 seeking short-term accommodation; the Garda stations involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7227/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the total number of occasions on which young homeless people presented themselves to Garda stations in the Dublin region in 1998 seeking short-term accommodation was 2,556. The breakdown by Garda station is as follows:

I hope the Deputy will appreciate that statistics could not be provided for all the Garda stations outside the DMA without a disproportionate expenditure of time and resources. The problem is essentially an urban one and if the Deputy identifies a particular area other than the DMA for which he requires information, I will make further inquiries.
