Vol. 502 No. 5

Written Answers. - Passenger Vessels.

Ivor Callely

Question:

45 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the level of inspection of boats, their berthing locations and so on where passengers are carried for hire and reward; if he has satisfied himself that there are sufficient inspections; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8633/99]

Depending on their size, Irish passenger vessels are surveyed by my Department's marine survey office either, every year, or every second year, to ensure compliance with safety standards, which are determined at the international maritime organisation, the European Union or national level, as appropriate. Before a licence or certificate is issued in respect of a passenger vessel, berthing locations are examined to determine their suitability. The safety regime in place meets the highest international standards and is subject to continual review and improvement.
