Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Register of Paedophiles.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

293 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the proposed legislation establishing a register of convicted paedophiles will be retrospective to include those with previous convictions; and if it will include those convicted in other jurisdictions. [9063/99]

The question of whether, and to what extent, the proposed legislation on the establishment of a sex offenders register will apply retrospectively is currently under consideration in the context of the preparation of legislative proposals for submission to Government. The question of whether, and to what extent, it will apply to persons convicted of sexual offences outside the State is likewise being considered.

Work on these legislative proposals is being given a high priority in my Department and it is my intention to have the details of the legislation developed as quickly as possible.
