Tallaght Hospital is in the process of building 70-75 private/semi-private beds which is an additional facility to the hospital and is being developed and financed by the hospital itself.
In relation to the catchment areas for these beds, strategy for the development of acute hospital services is based on the achievement of self-sufficiency within each health board area in the delivery of regional specialities. This means that the services are being developed through the provision of networks of local general hospitals which provide high quality medical and surgical facilities for their local catchment areas, larger regional hospitals which deliver services in a broad range of regional specialities across a health board area and a smaller number of tertiary or supra-regional hospitals which serve much wider catchment areas in particular specialities, enabling resources to be concentrated nationally to the best effect.
