Written Answers. - Post-Leaving Certificate Courses.

Nora Owen

Question:

88 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of post-leaving certificate courses offering teleservices training and child care training; the location of each course; the number of people participating; the number who have completed either course in the past two years; and the jobs filled by these trained personnel. [11220/99]

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:

Number of Participants

1998-99

449

965

Childcare

1,315

The number of participants is based on enrolments as of 31 October of the academic years indicated.
While my Department monitors the outcomes nationally for participants on plc courses, this information is not available for individual disciplines. However, the 1998 survey of the destinations of participants on 96-97 plc courses nationally indicates that 64.1 per cent entered employment, 16.2 per cent of which was part-time, and 36.1 per cent entered further or higher education and training.
In the case of the plc international teleservices courses, the two-year programme was offered in 20 centres with effect from September 1997 and was expanded to a further 12 centres in September 1998. The first cohort of students will complete their programme later this year.
