Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

228 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 173 of 27 April 1999, his attention has been drawn to any formal care programme in place for persons with dyspraxia; his views on whether this is adequate to cater for their medical needs; if this programme will be afforded to all persons with this impairment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11639/99]

As I have already pointed out to the Deputy in response to Parliamentary Question No. 173 of 27 April 1999, persons with dyspraxia have access to the generic community therapy services provided by the health boards. In terms of a formal care programme the Deputy may be thinking of the sensory integration programme provided by Cerebral Palsy Ireland in its centres in Sandymount, County Dublin and Bray, County Wicklow This programme is for children with a primary developmental motor problem and is beneficial for some children with dyspraxia. I understand that the programme has a high success rate. CPI is currently providing the service to 54 children. A similar service is provided by Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children and Temple Street Children's Hospital.
