Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - UN Year of the Elderly.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

289 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the new schemes or increased funding, if any, made to existing schemes to celebrate the year of the elderly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11417/99]

My Department's involvement regarding age is under the Employment Equality Act 1998, which was enacted in June, 1998, and the Equal Status Bill, 1999, which was published on 19 April 1999. The Employment Equality Act, 1998 outlaws discrimination in employment on nine grounds, including age. The aim is to bring this Act into operation in September 1999. The equal status legislation will outlaw discrimination in non-employment areas on the same nine grounds.

There are no new or existing schemes in my Department to celebrate the UN year of the elderly.
