Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

297 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the extent, if any, to which it is proposed to upgrade the technology available in Garda stations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11733/99]

A project for the radical upgrading of Garda IT systems is well advanced. This project – PULSE (police using leading systems effectively) – seeks to design, build, pilot test and roll out to the Garda Síochána an integrated suite of 17 information systems that will simplify and automate operational activities and integrate information to improve service, efficiency and effectiveness. These new systems will be made available in Garda stations on a nationwide basis over the next year.

Moreover, I recently secured Government approval to replace the existing Garda radio telecommunications infrastructure with a new, integrated, digital Garda radio network to the TETRA (terrestrial trunked radio) standard. This new network will be implemented on a phased basis over the period 2000-03, subject to successful pilot testing, and will provide, among many other benefits, secure, encrypted radio communications to the Garda Síochána throughout the country.

Question:

298 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has for the upgrading, refurbishment, extension or provision of new facilities in respect of present or proposed Garda stations in Kildare North; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11734/99]

It is proposed to build a Garda station at Leixlip and to this end the Office of Public Works is seeking a suitable site there. Kildare County Council has provided a premises for a new Garda station at Robertstown in exchange for the old station premises. The new station was occupied by the gardaí recently.
