Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prison Committals.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

313 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of children serving custodial sentences; and the age, offence and length of sentence in each case. [11267/99]

A total of 115 children are currently being detained in the young offender facilities operated under my Department. A total of 85 of these children are on long-term detention. A further 30 are on short-term remand.

The detail requested by the Deputy in relation to each of these cases is not readily available in my Department. I will arrange to have this information forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.
