Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

312 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the ongoing shortage of teachers in St. Mary's central school, Killenaule, County Tip perary; if the matter will be resolved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11266/99]

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

319 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will have examinations made into the situation of the shortage of teachers (details supplied) at St. Mary's primary school, Killenaule, County Tipperary, in view of the fact that there is great concern among the parents with regard to the ongoing shortage and the possibility of the loss of a teacher in the coming year. [11348/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 312 and 319 together.

First, I would like to point out that the appointment of teachers is a matter for the board of management of St. Marys central national school and my Department respects the independence and autonomy of the board in this matter.

Second, I am pleased to advise that, as a result of the improvements in the staffing schedule which I recently announced, the school in question will retain its current staffing level of a principal and seven assistant teachers for the 1999-2000 school year. In addition the school will continue to retain the services of a remedial teacher.
