Vol. 504 No. 2

Written Answers. - UN Year of the Elderly.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

323 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the new schemes or increased funding, if any, made to existing schemes to celebrate the year of the elderly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11419/99]

My Department has agreed the following: the dissemination to schools of leaflets and materials prepared by the national council on ageing; the inclusion in the second-level transition year of activities designed to foster intergenerational solidarity between school students and older people and making schools information technology facilities available to the wider community, with special provision for older people, outside of school hours in so far as is possible under the adult literacy and community education and other further education and training schemes.

In addition, a grant of £20,000 has been agreed for age action Ireland towards the operational costs of programmes for the aged in the field of adult education and training.
